SOME businesses have not fulfilled their duties to help the earthquake-hit areas with the amount they promised to donate, the People's Daily said on its Website yesterday.

Eleven companies, including Wal-Mart China, Google China and Unilever China, had paid about 15.53 million yuan (US$2.26 million) by last Friday, far less than the 195 million yuan they had promised.

Some of them actually did "nothing." Taiwan-based China Steel Corp promised to donate 100 million yuan, but the amount beside its name on a donors' list complied by the Ministry of Commerce was still zero, according to the report.

The list also showed no money from Texas Instruments, Auchan Trading Co or the Haixin Iron and Steel Group.

Wal-Mart China said it was willing to chip in 17 million yuan but the actual amount received by June 13 was 4 million in cash and 1 million in goods.

The company reportedly said the remainder would be paid in accordance with the progress of reconstruction.

Google (China) has sent 5 million yuan of the 17 million yuan it promised to disaster zones. The company said it was choosing qualified charity organizations to handle the other 12 million yuan.

Zeng Xiwen, the vice president and spokesperson for Unilever China, said it had paid 6 million yuan and another 2 million yuan was on the way. Unilever promised to donate 10 million yuan.

By June 13, foreign businesses, multinational companies and corporations in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan had paid in a total of 3.66 billion yuan - 3.04 billion yuan in cash.
