TWENTY-FIVE people who recovered from quake-related injuries in Shanghai left by train for Chengdu in Sichuan Province with their relatives last night.

Railway officials made special preparations to take care of the passengers. A designated waiting area on the station was opened for them with 20-plus volunteers on hand to help with luggage and boarding.

Extra sheets were prepared for the carriage taking the patients.

Food was being made available round the clock and special Sichuan dishes were added to the menu.

The patients had been flown to the city for treatment in late May. According to Shanghai Health Bureau, most of the 307 patients received by 19 hospitals were recovering well and would be discharged soon.

Chen Deming, a grade-three student at Dujiangyan Juyuan Middle School, was one of those on his way home last night. He was sent to Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital with an intestinal perforation caused by a stomach injury.

"All medical staff here treat me kindly," said Chen, 16.

"I admire their professional skills and I have decided to be a doctor in the future. I was told that my school has resumed operations. I can't wait to meet my classmates and restart my study."

He expressed a wish to study medicine at Tongji University's medical school, which is affiliated to the hospital.

Chen was buried when his school building collapsed during the May 12 earthquake. He and some 20 classmates were rescued by his father and another four parents.

Local hospitals said they were offering the best health care and psychological guidance to remaining patients. Some medical facilities are considering offering plastic surgery for those whose injuries had affected their appearance.

Experts from the Sino-US Plastic and Anesthetic Surgery Training Center at Shanghai Renai Hospital said they were eager to help. The Ministry of Health is working on guidelines for facial reconstruction for victims.
