The bright side of a subsidy
Created: 2008-6-18

SHANGHAI residents will only have to pay half the cost of energy-saving light bulbs after the government agreed to provide a 5-yuan (73 US cents) subsidy for each one.

As part of the central government's plan to save energy. Shanghai will provide subsidies for 1 million of the special light bulbs this year. Residents can choose from three types of energy-saving bulbs. A standard 10-watt energy saving bulb can replace a 50-watt incandescent lamp that saves 28 yuan a year and 115 yuan over its lifespan.
