The B-3841 plane was en route from Harbin in Heilongjiang to Bairin Zuoqi area in Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia to search for mineral resources, the report said.

The plane crashed into a hill about 45 kilometers from downtown Chifeng, a police officer told Xinhua.

The front of the plane was destroyed and the left wing broke off. The engine was still running after the crash, the report added.

Three people onboard the eight-seat plane were killed at impact. The survivor was trapped in the wreckage.

Bairin Zuoqi is a mountainous area. The region has a number of iron and zinc mines.
