Some 20 FDA officials will be on duty at the Huating Hotel & Towers and Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel throughout the night and day to check and inspect the entire process of preparing food - from buying raw materials to cooking and serving. "Food that has been cooked but not served for over two hours will have to be destroyed," said Zhang Baogeng, director of Xuhui District Food and Drug Administration. Both the hotels and stadium are in the same district. "Vehicles carrying out spot checks for heavy metal, pesticide remains and clenbuterol will be outside the hotels during the nine-day football events in the city." Yesterday, Shanghai FDA launched a half-monthly inspection on supermarkets, wet markets, restaurants and pharmacies around the Shanghai Stadium. A special drill targeting food and drug safety during the games will be launched later this month. Officials said pharmacies are another target and all local drug stores have been ordered to put warning labels on medications containing banned chemicals. "All such medicines and the special counters serving them should carry bilingual warnings for athletes," Zhang said. "During the Olympics Games, our officials will also be on duty at the dozens of pharmacies near the stadium to give guidance to customers, especially those participating in the football."
