Li Xiaopeng named new deputy governor of Shanxi

LI Xiaopeng, the son of the former Prime Minister Li Peng, has been appointed as the deputy governor of Shanxi Province and placed in charge of industry and coal mining, according to Daynews.com.cn.

Li, 49, has resigned as chairman of state-owned Huaneng Power Group, the top Chinese power company listed on the Hong Kong and Shanghai Stock Exchanges.

Meanwhile, the Shanxi government exempted Liang Bin, the former deputy governor of the province, from his post.

Li, a native of Sichuan Province, is the eldest son of Li Peng, who served as prime minister from 1987 to 1998. The senior Li stepped down from his final post as head of the national legislature in 2003.

Li studied electrical engineering department at North China Electric Power University in 1978. He worked in the Electric Power Research Institute after graduation. In 1992 he worked at Huaneng Power International Development, another leading power firm.

He is now a member of the Standing Committee of Shanxi Province People's Congress and also a delegate of the 11th National People's Congress.
