THE national weather authority issued its second-highest alert at 10am today for rainstorms in southern China.

Heavy rain was forecast to hit south Guizhou, south Hunan, south Jiangxi, Guangxi, central Guangdong and southeast Yunnan, the China Meteorological Bureau said.

Rainstorms will hit Guangxi and Hunan provinces, the bureau added.

The bureau urged people in those areas to stop outdoor work. The bureau suggested people remain indoors as the storms could trigger floods and landslides.

Heavy rain was expected to remain in these areas for the next three days, the bureau added.

Many areas of south China have received heavy rain in the last week.

In Guangdong Province, a resident was killed in Xinyi City by a landslide that was triggered by rain on Tuesday.

The rainstorm has destroyed 1,532 houses and flooded 87,473 hectares of farmland across the province. Seventeen highways were forced to close. A total of 258,875 kilometers of highway were destroyed. About 1.5 million homes were damaged.

In Hubei Province, four-straight days of rain have caused 41.7 million yuan (US$5.96 million) in losses. The province's meteorological bureau said it was the heaviest rainfall so far this year.
