Gas pump stations ordered to reopen

SHANGHAI is urging pump stations under maintenance to resume operation as soon as possible, among other measures, to address a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas which powers more than 200,000 mopeds in town, a government spokesman said yesterday.

Rising crude oil prices have pushed up LPG prices, widening the gap between domestic selling prices and import rates.

Shanghai's LPG demand is mainly supplied by imports.

The situation left many service stations out of supply which were then closed for maintenance checks.

Long queues of mopeds at stations still in service are common.

Authorities have decided to keep giving subsidies on LPG sales to ease stations' operating costs and asked those under maintenance which can restart to make haste, municipal government spokesman Chen Qiwei said.

Chen also pledged to keep the public up to date with locations of those LPG stations that are in service.

For gasoline and diesel, Chen said Sinopec and PetroChina had boosted supplies to Shanghai since June.
