AUTHORITIES at a city downstream of the largest quake lake in Sichuan removed the flood alert this afternoon as water levels dropped, Xinhua news agency reported today.

The outflow of the Tangjiashan Lake in Sichuan's Mianyang City fell to 56 cubic meters per second through the sluice channel at 11:15am today, far below the level of 1,000 cubic meters per second prescribed in the yellow alert the city government issued yesterday morning, the report said.

The yellow alert, the second highest warning for a flood, was released at 10:55am yesterday in the wake of possible landslides and dam bursts at the lake since drainage of the lake started on Saturday morning, the report said.

The Tangjiashan quake lake was formed after quake-triggered landslides from Tangjiashan Mountain blocked the Tongkou River running through Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in the quake. It began to drain on Saturday morning through a man-made diversion channel.
