Torrential Rains Wreak Havoc

TORRENTIAL rains last week forced the evacuation of 113,000 people in China's southwestern Guizhou Province, the provincial flood control headquarters said yesterday.
From May 1 to 31, 365 towns in 40 counties were hit by torrential rains, leaving at least 39 people dead, 12 missing and 1.44 million affected, according to a spokesman for the headquarters.
The disaster also destroyed 4,669 houses, causing a direct economic loss of more than 1 billion yuan (US$144.1 million).
Torrential rains also caused frequent landslides in Guizhou.
