Hundreds of Jordanians protest nuclear program

AMMAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Jordanians on Friday held a demonstration in the capital Amman to protest the government's plan to build two nuclear reactors for power generation.

In downtown Amman, the demonstrators, including some tribes members and activists, called for ending the nuclear plan, saying it entails risks to the health of the citizens.

Holding banners urging coordinated efforts to end the program, the demonstrators chanted: "We want Jordan free of nuclear reactors."

Jordan, which relies on imports to meet about 96 percent of its energy needs, plans to build two 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactors for power generation. Last year, Jordan selected Russia's Rosatom to build the two reactors, which are expected to enter operation in 2022.
