GUATEMALA CITY, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nine members of a family including a baby and a young girl were killed Saturday in a remote jungle region in northern Guatemala, the country's officials said.
Neighbors said the killings took place when two SUVs carrying armed men arrived at the family's house.
About 20 gunmen opened fire on the family, shooting dead seven adults, a five-year-old girl and a three-month old baby girl.
Army spokesman Ismael Cifuentes said that eight people died at the site and a ninth died in hospital.
The shooting appeared to be related to a fight between local drug traffickers, according to Security Minister Mauricio Lopez.
"There's a lot of conflict in this area related to drug trafficking," he said. "We believe the men that carried out this attack were involved in drug trafficking."
Security officials are still conducting interviews with witnesses and they have not yet made any arrests.
