On this day in 1976, construction began on the Memorial Hall for Chairman Mao Zedong at Tian'anmen Square in Beijing. The hall is south of the Monument to the People's Heroes. Construction was completed on May 24, 1977. The crystal sarcophagus of Mao containing his body was moved to the hall on August 29, 1977.
