On this day in 1860, British and French soldiers destroyed Yuanmingyuan Imperial Garden, or the Summer Palace, in Beijing. The invaders stole a countless number of valuable items and then burned down the place, which was known as the "Versailles of the East," to cover up their crime. The Qing government restored the garden in 1900, but it was soon destroyed by the Eight-Power Allied Forces with soldiers from Britain, the United States, Germany, France, Tsarist Russia, Japan, Italy and Austria.
