On this day in 1977, China established a memorial hall for Mao Zedong, the former chairman of the People’s Republic of China, at Tian’anmen Square in Beijing. Mao’s body was put in a crystal coffin in the center of the hall. The hall also set up memorial rooms for Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping and other former leaders. About 5.4 million people visit the hall every year.
