On this day in 1972, Chen Yi, one of the 10 marshals of the People’s Republic of China and also the first mayor of Shanghai, died in Beijing. He was 71. Chen was one of the country’s most famous generals during the War of Resistance against the Japanese Invasion (1937-1945) and China’s Liberation War (1945-1948). He was also commander of the East China Military Zone and served as deputy premier of China in 1954 and foreign minister in 1958.
