Shanghai Tang opening

Shanghai Tang, beginning as a daring and colorful concept boutique in 1994, is entering into another era, with its largest flagship store officially opened last week at the corner of Huaihai Road M. and Maoming Road.

The more than 900-square-meter Shanghai Tang Cathay Mansion was designed to respect the Cathay Theater’s original Art Deco facade, while bringing a new life to the interior with a creative approach to blend Asian and Western aesthetics.

Executive Chairman Raphael le Masne de Chermont, together with the brand’s chief womenswear designer Joseph Li, chief menswear designer Armele Barbier, chief knitwear designer Winnie So and chief home and fabrics designer Fabien Blachier, attended the grand opening ceremony followed by the Shanghai Tang autumn/winter 2013 collection fashion show at the Okura Garden Hotel. The gala event attracted Chinese celebrities including actress Sun Li, actor Huang Xiaoming, model/actor Hu Bing and actress Song Jia, all of whom selected Shanghai Tang outfits to demonstrate modern Chinese chic.

Led by famous campaign models Zhao Lei and Zhang Lina, the event opened with graphic, minimalist womenswear. Romantic, abstract prints inspired by China’s natural wonders were on display, as were tribal prints in vibrant hues of blue, teal, orange, fuchsia and heather grey.

For menswear, the autumn/winter season is defined by layering and eclectic fabric mixing, such as a tweed jacket with padded nylon sleeves and a tailored cotton blend coat with an attached contrasted nylon vest. It also featured minimal styling in a classic palette of blues and navy accented by floral print shirts and bright colors.
