New attractions bloom down leafy lane

PART of the former French concession, Anfu Road is lined by leafy plane trees, providing shade during the warmer months for the stylish boutiques, fine bistros and innovative, quirky retailers. Taking a walk down the tranquil street always brings surprises, with new retailers springing up. The ever-changing street is popular with expats who work and live here. Anfu Road hosts two of the area's most expensive residential compounds: The Summit and Chevalier Place. So take a stroll in the "Rue Dupleix" and discover all of its chic spots.

Wine & Bike

The bikes displayed outside Wine & Bike are more than just decoration. These state-of-the-art cycles are for sale - available for around 6,800 yuan (US$1,100). Bikes and wine are two important aspects of the owner's lifestyle, and the business provides an opportunity to show the connection between them. Wine & Bike carries a wide range of good quality wine, including varieties from South Africa and France, available by the glass and bottle. Prices are around 50 yuan for a glass and above 130 yuan for a bottle. The two-storey space covers a total of around 80 square meters and can host a maximum of 30 people. The space outside can seat another 15 or so. With its innovative concept of combining wine and bikes, this is a quirky, inimitable place for hanging out.

Piling Palang

Piling Palang is an eye-catching addition to leafy Anfu Road, a street already popular for its innovative stores. Deng Bingbing, the creative director of Piling Palang has a vision of showcasing uniquely designed quality objects. These are inspired by Oriental symbolism, colors and motifs, infused with contemporary influences from the globe, and made by skilled craftsmen. The shop is filled with decorative items and lifestyle objects in a range of shapes and sizes - from petite to oversized - with vibrant colors and inspiring graphic patterns. The objects are categorized into three materials: lacquer, cloisonne and ceramics, with prices starting from 48 yuan (US$7.77) for a ceramic tea cup, all the way to 300,000 yuan for an eggplant-shaped cloisonnwe art piece. The cloisonne Chinese lantern vase designed by Deng won the Elle Decoration International Design Awards China 2011. Traditional cloisonne is being transformed by design and new techniques into impressive art pieces, say the owners.

Brut Cake Home & Living

Hidden away in one of small bungalows along Anfu Road, Brut Cake is a quirkily decorated shop featuring vintage and new items. Products range from ceramics to refurbished vintage furniture, plus many other lines. Open since last December, Nicole Teng, its designer from Taiwan, uses her bare hands to add a special touch to every item found in the shop. Highlights include a 100-year-old teak chair with exquisite carvings that are well preserved, on sale for 6,000 yuan (US$972). Teng, who has a passion for vintage cloth, used old material to spruce up the old chair, giving it a new modern look, yet without losing its heritage value. The store also carries a variety of hand-made products - a utensil holder is priced at 80 yuan while a refurnished sofa is sold at 10,000 yuan. In a two-week collaboration running until the first week of May, ceramic works by other artists are being placed in the shop. One of the designers previously produced lines for the Japanese Muji chain.
