Teenager held for murder of taxi driver

A 17-YEAR-OLD has been held by police in connection with the murder of a taxi driver in the city’s Minhang District.

The teenager, surnamed He, a migrant worker from central China’s Henan Province, said he murdered the cabbie during an argument over a 40 yuan (US$6.5) taxi fare, according to police.

The 53-year-old victim, surnamed Tang, was stabbed at about 2am on Monday, near the gate of Shanghai Jinzheng Electronic Industry Co Ltd on Jinglian Road.

Tang, was found with severe neck wounds by police and later died in hospital.

A security guard at Shanghai Jinzheng told Minhang police that he saw a young man asking about the cabbie, but that he quickly left the scene afterwards.

He was held by police in a residential complex in Xuhui District at 12:15am yesterday.

According to police, He said he took the taxi to meet a friend on Jinglian Road.

When He found that he had no money, he called his friend for help. However, the friend didn’t answer his phone.

He then argued with Tang over the fare and stabbed him, it is alleged.

“I had already told him that I had no money on me,” police quoted He as saying. “I took out the knife just to frighten him, but he was angry and grabbed my my hand. Then I stabbed him.

“I regret it greatly, but what’s done is done,” He is reported to have said.

Police said the investigations are continuing.
