Teacher fired over pupil slap outcry

A PRIMARY school teacher who made children slap each other on the face has been fired, the Qingpu District Education Bureau said yesterday.

Li Shichao, teacher of a fourth-grade class at Xiaokang Private Primary School, was dismissed after telling children to slap their deskmates on Tuesday, said officials.

Children were also made to miss lunch by their teacher.

The bureau began a probe following a complaint from a pupil’s father, who said his son had to slap his own face because his deskmate was off that day.

The father, surnamed Li, told STV the teacher was annoyed because some children went outside to play during a lunch break and were seen by the principal, who reproached the teacher.

Some girls even cried after being slapped, the father said.

Li Shichao denied ordering children to slap each other when confronted by an STV reporter yesterday. He said the children missed lunch because they made mistakes and he had to talk to them, which took time.

But the bureau said its investigation showed that the parents claims were essentially true.

The school’s administrators were asked to apologize to the students and parents in the class in person, said the bureau.

Five school officials, including the vice principal, moral education instructor and cafeteria manager, were given financial punishments.

The bureau said it has organized psychological experts to  counsel the children.

The school is attended mostly by children of migrant workers in the district. The education bureau said it will strengthen management of schools used by migrant families.
