Spam text messages gang nabbed, 5 illegal transmitters seized
MEMBERS of a gang that sent hundreds of thousands of spam text messages a day were detained and five illegal transmission stations were seized in Yangpu District, local police said today.
Such mobile stations, consisting of an antenna, a laptop and a battery, can jam mobile phone signals to send spam messages that also can be part of telecom fraud. Police said these base stations can send about 200,000 pieces of spam messages in eight hours.
The 30-year-old gang organizer, surnamed Yao, said they were able to target any area their customers selected and send spam messages to cell phones in these areas. They also had 20 vehicles that could be fitted with illegal mobile.
A gang member said they charged 4,500 yuan (US$743) for sending 200,000 pieces of spam in a day.
While police mentioned at least two members of the gang had been caught, the total gang members detained was not disclosed.
Their illegal stations were purchased in other provinces for 10,000 yuan per set.
Since September, Shanghai police have caught 41 suspects involved in using such illegal base stations and seized 31 sets of devices.
Yang Weigen, a local police officer, said some messages attempting to lure victims of telecom fraud were also sent by illegal base stations.
