Recycler says he wants to return iPhones to rightful owner

A MAN who recycles items in trash cans said he is trying to find the owner of a "treasure box" filled with new iPhones he spotted in the wee hours of Sunday.

The self-employed man, who combs through trash bins very early in the morning every day, said he made the discovery about 3am Sunday outside a building near the Shanghai Railway Station, Xinmin Evening News reported today.

The man, surnamed Zhang, said a big box left beside an air conditioner's outdoor unit caught his attention as he walked along the street with help of a flashlight.

He moved the box and found it was a carton wrapped in a ragged woven bag. The man said he sat there for more than an hour waiting for the owner but no one appeared. He said he opened the box in the hope of finding clues about the owner, only to discover several iPhones. The products were brand new with intact packages, he said.

Zhang said he later sent the box home and returned quickly to continue waiting for the owner.

"I thought the goods are worth a lot. If the owner calls the police, the police should have come over quickly. I waited but nothing happened until it was daytime," he told the newspaper.

According to a photo released by the newspaper, the phones were believed to be the iPhone 5c. But the report didn't specify the exact number or model of the phones in the box.

An iPhone 5c sells for more than 4,300 yuan (US$705) on the mainland market.
