Net speeds to reach 100 Mbps
Shanghai Telecom will upgrade its broadband network, tripling the speed to 100 Mbps (megabytes per second) next month, the company said yesterday.
The improved speed offers users various services such as high-definition online video.
Shanghai Telecom will start the upgrades on September 1. The company already has more than 3 million fiber optic broadband customers.
“I am glad to hear the news because I am addicted to online films and pictures,” said Wei Zhong, a 32-year-old IT website editor.
But Wei, who pays 1,500 yuan (US$245) a year for a 30 Mbps network now, said he was concerned about a possible price hike. He said he could accept a fee up to 2,000 yuan a year for the 100 Mbps service.
Shanghai Telecom declined to say how much the new service will cost.
The city’s average broadband speed is 16 to 20 Mbps now.
