Man held for driving knock-off Smart car
A knock-off Smart car with a fake license plate was spotted on Longteng Road in Xuhui District on Wednesday and the driver was held for investigation, Shanghai Morning Post reported yesterday.
A policeman found the car suspicious as it was waiting for traffic lights at a crossroad about 3:50pm on Wednesday.
He stopped the car and found the license plate was a printed cardboard. The fake Smart is smaller than the real one and it has no exhaust pipe.
The 39-year-old car owner, surnamed Jiang, said he came from Jiangxi Province and works in a Shanghai company.
He bought the car in Shandong Province.
Jiang said his car was made by an unlicensed workshop in a small town and was powered by battery. He used the car every day to take his daughter to school.
The policeman has issued him a ticket for driving an unlicensed vehicle and using a fake plate. The case is still under investigation.
