Fudan medical student to stand trial in poisoning death case
A POSTGRADUATE medical student of Fudan University who is accused of poisoning his roommate to death in April will stand on trial next week.
Lin Senhao will stand trial at the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People’s Court next Wednesday, the City Business Daily, a Sichuan Province-based newspaper, reported yesterday.
Lin reportedly held some grudge against him roommate, Huang Yang, over trivial matters.
Huang, 27, a postgraduate student of Fudan University Medical School, died on April 16 after drinking water that was laced with a deadly chemical.
The paper reported that Huang’s parents will arrive in the city on Monday from their hometown in Zigong City in Sichuan Province.
The court accepted the case on October 30 and Lin was charged with intentional homicide.
Prosecutors claimed Lin dropped a deadly toxic chemical in a water dispenser they shared in their room.
Huang felt sick after drinking the water from the dispenser on April 1 and was taken to Zhongshan Hospital.
Previous media reports said Huang suffered severe abdominal pains and fell into a coma afterwards.
He was diagnosed with liver failure and died of poisoning on April 16.
As Huang told a doctor that the water he drank tasted strange, police investigated the dispenser in his dormitory room and found it contained N-Nitrosodimethylamine, an organic chemical highly toxic to the liver.
The chemical is often used to induce liver disease in rats in cancer experiments in laboratories.
Police suspected Huang’s roommate Lin and took him into custody on April 19. After being arrested, Lin admitted poisoning his roommate.
Lin told police that he stole the chemical from the university and injected it into the dispenser on March 31.
