Eateries to install scales so diners can verify weight of food

MORE than 100 restaurants in the city will have standard, approved scales that allow diners to weigh foods installed before December to keep businesses from cheating, authorities said today.
The Shanghai Hongziji Restaurant in Putuo District was the first in the city to install such a scale, which is near its seafood area. Consumers can check the weight and total price of the seafood they order after inputting the unit price of their food.
The scales are similar to those used at wet markets in the city.
Officials with the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said complaints over short-weight fish and other seafood is on the rise, with some eateries using unapproved electronic scales to change the readout, some not using scales at all, and some contracting their seafood business to other companies while failing to oversee the contractors.
The scales are expected to be installed in restaurants citywide.
The Hongkou outlet of Merrylin, a famous restaurant brand in the city, was found in March to be using an electronic scale that was not checked by the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau. A remote-control receiver was found inside the electronic scale that allowed restaurant workers to add 30 percent more to what the seafood was supposed to weigh.
The restaurant had 300,000 yuan (US$48,387) of income confiscated and was fined 2,000 yuan. The chain restaurant was also ordered in April to stop using "Shanghai Famous Trademark" on signs at its eateries.
