Drugs seized, 6 held in warehouse raids

Shanghai police discovered 43 kilograms of methamphetamine when they raided two warehouses earlier this week.
It was the largest amount of the drug seized since the latest crackdown on illicit drug dealing was launched in May, police said yesterday. Six people are in custody, they added.
The drug was of an extremely high purity at 80 percent, compared with the usual 25 to 70 percent in other drug trafficking cases.
Police began their investigation into the gang in July after they located a car suspected of being used to transport the drug. They said the owner was a relative of the ringleader.
Narcotics officers found that the gang consisted of an organizer surnamed Wu, a driver surnamed Cao and four unidentified members who were mainly responsible for contacting buyers.
The gang had a warehouse in Shanghai and the other in a province that was not named as investigations were still ongoing. The city warehouse was in a residential complex in the Pudong New Area.
On Monday, police tailed members of the gang when they drove out of the city to make a drugs deal. The gang members drove back to Shanghai on Wednesday morning with 25 kilograms of the drug.
After making sure all six were in the two warehouses, police raided them both on Wednesday evening. The Pudong raid realized 25 kilograms of methamphetamine while 18 kilograms was found at the other site. Some 350,000 yuan (US$57,422) was also seized.
The gang also had a hideout where they could melt and refine the methamphetamine to increase its purity using special equipment, police said.
