‘Baby for iPhones’ couple tried

A COUPLE who sold their baby online and reportedly used the cash to buy iPhones have stood trial accused of child trafficking, Yangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.

The husband, surnamed Teng, and his wife, surnamed Zhang, sold their newborn daughter for 50,000 yuan (US$8,280), said prosecutors.

Both come from one-child families and by law can have two children.

When Zhang gave birth to her third baby last April, the couple decided to seek a wealthy family to “adopt” her, prosecutors said.

Zhang offered the child for sale in online postings for 30,000 to 50,000 yuan, said prosecutors.

A customer, surnamed Gu, went to the couple’s home on May 8 and paid 50,000 yuan for their daughter, prosecutors told the court.

Both the accused were unemployed and relied on their families’ support, the court heard.

In court, the couple said they gave up their daughter not for profit but to provide her with a better future.

Prosecutors said that as Zhang didn’t terminate the pregnancy and the couple gave the child to another person for money, their actions should be seen as child trafficking.

Earlier, it was reported that the couple used the 50,000 yuan to buy iPhones and designer shoes online. Yangpu District People’s Court has yet to return a verdict.
