Airlines say they have best place to view moon for festival

CHINESE airlines today announced hundreds of the best flights on which passengers can get the best view of the moon around the Mid-Autumn Festival that falls on September 19, when the moon is at its biggest and brightest phase of the year.

Some 700 domestic and international flights will take off and land at Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao international airports between 7pm and 2am late next week, the best period to watch the moon, according to the Shanghai Airport Authority.

Spring Airlines has about 100 flights between Wednesday and Saturday of next week on which passengers can view the full moon in the air.

Passengers should sit on the right side of cabins for flights flying north or east, and on the left for those heading south or west. They also should avoid seats near the wings, an official with the local budget airline said.

Some 18 flights between 7:30pm and 8pm on the festival day will have the best view, when the moon is at its biggest and brightest phase of the year.

Spring Airlines picked Flight 9C8902 from Mianyang in Sichuan Province to Shanghai that takes off at 7:35pm and Flight 9C8866 from Urumqi to Shanghai as having the best view.

International flights include Flight 9C8891 from Shanghai's Pudong airport to Bangkok, Spring Airlines said.

"The color of the moon will change as planes ascend and the experience will be totally different from that on the ground," a press official with China Eastern Airlines said.

China Eastern also has four flights on which passengers will have great views of the moon - MU5121/28 (Hongqiao to Beijing), MU5339 (Hongqiao to Guangzhou), MU5393 (Hongqiao to Zhengzhou) and MU5647/8 (Hongqiao to Wuyishan).
