Air purifiers perform poorly in tests

THERE are no national or local standards for air purifying machines, leading to false and misleading advertisements in the market, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said yesterday.

The commission conducted a comparative test on the performance of air purifying machines and found many perform poorly.

The commission tested the purifying efficiency of particulate matter, formaldehyde, the clean air delivery rate (CADR) and energy efficiency.

In terms of particulate matter and formaldehyde, there are no standards, said Shen Hao, director of the Shanghai quality supervision and test center of environmental protection products.

But companies used PM2.5 and formaldehyde numbers in advertisements, Shen said.

The commission tested 22 air purifiers with prices ranging between 1,488 yuan (US$240) and 9,300 yuan. It found eight had a formaldehyde purifying efficiency below 20 percent. They included a sample of famous brands such as Electrolux (Z9123), LG (PH-U450WN), and Honeywell (18400).

A Samsung air purifier had a formaldehyde purifying efficiency of 50 percent and a Sharp machine reached 61 percent, according to the commission.

The clean air delivery rate index on the label of six air purifiers did not match the rate in the commission's tests. Among them, a Lexy (KJ701-3) air purifier had a CADR of only 57 percent of that tested by the commission.

Tao Ailian, executive deputy secretary general of the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission, said the market is booming due to concerns about poor air quality.

The commission called on authorities to draft more standards in the industry.
