3.8m tourists visit city in first 3 days

AROUND 3.8 million out-of-town tourists flocked to Shanghai over the first three days of the National Day holiday — up 10 percent over the same period of last year.
Nanjing Road, the Bund and Yuyuan Garden remained the most popular spots with locals and tourists alike, according to the Shanghai Tourism Bureau statistics. Nanjing Road E. pedestrian street attracted 5.8 million tourists and residents, while 3.2 million were recorded at the Bund.
The city is expected to receive 8 million tourists by Monday, last day of the weeklong holiday break, officials have said.
To ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing streets to reach the Bund, 4,000 police officers were sent to the area. From 4:30pm to 11pm, officers stood in line at the sides of zebra crossings, keeping vehicles and pedestrians apart.
Meanwhile, extra guards were brought in at the Zigzag Bridge in Yuyuan Garden, which attracted more than 1.3 million visitors since the holiday started on Tuesday. And to keep the crowds moving, there was a one-way flow across the bridge.
Across the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower took measures to limit numbers.
Even so, visitors wanting to get to the top of the city landmark had to queue for four hours.
The “moon boat,” the acclaimed Saudi Arabia Pavilion during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, welcomed some 20,000 visitors in the first two days of the holiday — a 50 percent increase on 2012.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum was visited by 90,000 people, up 30 percent over last year.
Shanghai’s Metro system has been running smoothly over the holiday, ferrying some 13.4 million passengers in the first two days of the holiday break.
Extra staff have been added at stations such as People’s Square and Lujiazui, which are close to numerous tourist spots.
City parks recorded a 10 percent rise in visitors, with 3.14 million people visiting green spaces up to yesterday.
Shanghai Wildlife Park had a record 40,100 visitors on Wednesday — the highest figure since it opened in 1995 and up 21 percent year on year. Many people had to be turned away. The zoo is holding an African animals festival and a 6D cinema is also open.
The Jinshan railway has been a popular choice for tourists heading for a seaside trip to suburban Jinshan Beach. The 30-minute train ride from downtown to Jinshan District attracted more than 70,000 passengers in the first two days of the holiday.
