Trains, planes, buses canceled
Several bullet train and bus services from Shanghai were suspended yesterday and airlines canceled flights due to Typhoon Fitow, which is expected to bring torrential rain and gales to the city today.
Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued the year’s first typhoon blue alert, the lowest of a four-level system, at 9am, warning authorities to take precautions and ordering the suspension of group outdoor activities and work on high-rise buildings.
Rain is also forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday. Temperatures should range between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Parts of the Huangpu River exceeded alert levels yesterday due to tidal influences. A waterside platform in Binjiang Avenue on the banks of the Huangpu was shut down temporarily after it flooded.
The City Beach in suburban Jinshan District and Bihaijinsha Beach in Fengxian District were shut and tourists are being urged to avoid riverside and seaside areas in the city today.
Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center canceled 22 tour routes to eastern coastal areas of Zhejiang Province such as Putuo Mountain and Ningbo City.
Shanghai Railway Bureau has suspended 42 bullet train services from Shanghai Railway Station to cities such as Fuzhou and Xiamen in Fujian Province and Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province today.
China Eastern Airlines canceled nearly 40 flights to cities including Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Okinawa and Taipei from both Hongqiao and Pudong airports yesterday while China Southern Airlines canceled flights to Taipei, and Air China and Juneyao Airlines canceled flights to Fuzhou and Wenzhou.
Some Shanghai residents who left the city for a break during the National Day holiday week — which ends today — returned home early in a bid to avoid being caught up in the typhoon.
