Smog cloaks city again amidst heavy pollution

SHANGHAI was cloaked in smog again today, as a cold front has brought in pollution from the north but an increase in winds had not yet significantly improved conditions by pushing smog out of the city.

Shanghai’s Air Quality Index was 231 at 2pm, indicating heavily polluted conditions, officials reported.

The level of tiny PM 2.5 pollution at the time stood at 297.4 micrograms per cubic meter, almost four times the national level of 75. The PM2.5 density had eased from 360 micrograms at 8am.

Meteorologists forecast that the arrival of cold front is likely to help reduce the air pollution due to increasing winds this week.

Another orange heavy fog alert was issued by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau at 2:47am, when the visibility in Baoshan District was reduced to 300 meters, the lowest among all districts. But the alert was removed at 7am as most areas had a visibility of more than 1 kilometer.
