Rare red storm alert as rains pound city

Shanghai saw its first red rain storm alert — the highest of a four-level warning system — this year today, when thunderstorms hit the city in the afternoon, flooding roads in several districts.

Thunderstorms were initially confined to the suburban Baoshan and Jiading districts as well as Chongming Island, where they brought down the mercury, offering welcome relief from a brief hot spell. Temperatures ranged between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius at 2:20pm. Later, thunder clouds spread across most of the city, dumping heavy rains accompanied by strong winds.

Two yellow alerts for lightning and gale were issued by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau at 1:35pm. An orange rain storm alert, which was issued at 4:18pm, was upgraded to a red one 26 minutes later, indicating precipitations of more than 100 millimeters.

Pudong New Area experienced the heaviest precipitation of 137.1 mm at 4:50pm, while precipitation in downtown Xujiahui reached 67 mm at 5:10pm.
