Power load may increase

Shanghai’s maximum power load could rise up to 9 percent this winter compared to last year due to lower temperatures, but officials said they expect the electricity supply will be sufficient.

The State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Co estimated the city’s maximum power load could reach 25 million kilowatts in the case of extreme cold weather. The highest load registered last winter was 22.97 million kilowatts.

The average temperature this winter is expected to be lower than in recent years and residents will likely use their heaters often to stay warm.

Shanghai Electric said its maximum capacity will be 26 million kilowatts this winter, which should be sufficient to meet peak demand.

The company also said it has contingency plans in place.
