Massive Yangtze River rail-highway bridge to slash travel times to Jiangsu

CONSTRUCTION will begin by month’s end on a massive highway-railway bridge across the Yangtze River linking Shanghai and Jiangsu Province and significantly shortening travel times in the area, authorities said today.
The 5-kilometer span across the river, taking an investment of 14.2 billion yuan (US$2.3 billion), would become the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge when finished in 2017, the transportation authority of Jiangsu Province said. Such bridges have one or more towers for cables that support the bridge deck. Construction will commence on February 28.
The bridge would be part of the 137km-long Shanghai-Nantong Highway-Railway. It will mean a trip of only an hour by bullet train from Jiading District in Shanghai to Nantong city in Jiangsu after the completion of the bridge. The trip to Nantong can take more than 8 hours now via a circuitous route, the Jiangsu Transportation Bureau said. Since there is no direct railway between Shanghai and Nantong, passengers currently have to take a train to Nanjing and other Jiangsu cities before traveling to the terminus in Nantong.
Travel times between Shanghai and Shandong Province will also be shortened.
The Shanghai Nantong Railway will have nine stations including two in Shanghai — in the Anting and Huangdu towns in Jiading District. The stations in Jiangsu will be built in major cities like Zhangjiagang, Changshu and Taicang. It will take only about 10 minutes to take a train from the three Jiangsu cities to Shanghai.
The project will relieve pressure of the Jiangyin and Sutong bridges in Jiangsu Province to make the traffic between Shanghai and Jiangsu flow more smoothly.
The bridge will become the second highway-railway bridge over the Yangtze after the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge that was built in 1968.
Jiangsu Province plans to invest over 69 billion yuan in its transportation facilities this year. Most of the money will be used to more than double the length of its railways, the provincial government has said.
