Line 16 to offer best view of wild park

Metro Line 16 will offer the best window among all of Shanghai’s Metro lines when services on the route start at the end of the year.
The line goes past the Shanghai Wild Animal Park, and if one is lucky, he or she will be able to spot deer, tigers and other wild animals.
Line 16 will connect Pudong’s Luoshan Road to Dishui Lake in the Nanhui area, and after the experts complete their full appraisals, services are expected to start by the end of the year.
Buses will connect to the Metro to take passengers to tourist spots like Xinchang Ancient Town, Shanghai Wild Animal Park, China Maritime Museum and Dishui Lake among others. The Huinan station is decorated with peach blossom elements. The annual Nanhui Peach Blossom Festival is held close by.
The line will also benefit students living in the university towns in southeast Shanghai’s Lingang area.
In a new experiment, the electricity-generating power supply poles will be done away with, and in its place the power lines will be laid out on one side of the track. The new track design is expected to avoid disruption of services caused by falling objects on the pantographs that were previously blamed for short circuits on other lines, said Xie Jiong, general manager of the Line 16 project.
Xie said Line 16 is relatively close to the East China Sea and will likely encounter heavy winds, thunder and lightening.
Twelve trains will be put into operation and will run with an interval of 15 minutes during rush hours and 20 minutes at other times. They will reach high speeds of 108 kilometers per hour — the fastest on the network.
The 52.8km route has 11 stations, with the longest stretch between East Huinan and Shuyuan stations being 10.6km.
The line will have two running modes. Some trains will halt at every station with the entire journey taking 50 minutes.
The other faster service will make halts at only four big stations (Luoshan Road, Xinchang, Huinan and Dishui Lake stations). The entire journey will take only 38 minutes.
However, commuters will likely face hurdles at the Luoshan Road Station because of construction work.
The trains will have three carriages at the start. Unlike other lines, the seating arrangement on Line 16 is like regular trains to make the comparatively long ride more comfortable. Line 16 will later be extended to the Longyang Road Station on Metro Line 2 by October next year.
The Metro operator said Line 12 that connects Qufu Road to Jinhai Road will also start operation by the end of the year.
