City sets new all-time record high of 40.8 degrees

TODAY'S high broke the all-time official heat record in Shanghai at 40.8 degrees Celsius, recorded at 12:37pm at the benchmark Xujiahui observatory, after the previous record high of 40.6 was reached both yesterday and on July 26.

The city never had experienced two consecutive days with highs above 40 degrees before.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a red alert, the highest level in system, for high temperatures at 7:52am today, the earliest time of day this year.

The high-temperature record before this summer was 40.2 degrees, set on July 12, 1934.

Today ironically is Li Qiu, one of 24 Chinese solar terms that indicates the arrival of autumn. But experts said earlier that it wouldn't mark the coming of the official, meteorological autumn, which arrives when the average daily temperature is recorded below 22 degrees for five straight days.

"The city is still experiencing the hottest period of summer even in Li Qiu," Man Liping, a chief service officer of the bureau, said, "There will also be a round of heat after Li Qiu."
