City plans specialized detective force to crack down on food safety crime

SHANGHAI police will set up a food safety criminal detective force soon to crack down on cases endangering the health of local residents, said Bai Shaokang, director of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.

The specialized team under the police bureau will be drawn from law enforcement officers from the various government bodies and train some new forces for the mission, Bai told a meeting of the annual session of the Shanghai People’s Congress.

“The bureau aims to deter food safety criminals by severely cracking down on their counterparts to improve the food safety of local residents,” Bai said.

The move is also expected to push the improvement of food safety management and encourage the building of a complete food safety network, he said.

Some 416 suspects accused of food safety violations were arrested in 137 cases in Shanghai last year, increasing 49 percent year on year, said Yan Zuqiang, director of the Shanghai Food Safety Office.

“The city’s police authority has begun collaborating with the office to jointly crack down on the cases and hand over the suspects to the police,” Yan said at the same meeting today.
