Poisoning scare as students fall sick

Officials from the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said they are investigating food poisoning-like symptoms among 50-odd students at a primary school in the Pudong New Area and expect to release the results of its findings on the administration’s website today.

Officials said students’ vomit samples have been sent to the laboratory for tests.

Some 50 students at the Affiliated Primary School of Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Foreign Language College on Weimin Road, Huinan Town, suffered from severe bouts of vomiting and fever on Wednesday.

Parents suspected it was mass food poisoning from the lunch provided by the school on Tuesday. No one was in critical condition.

But school officials reached by Metro Express, a local paper, suggested it had something to do with the recent air pollution rather than food poisoning. They insisted that the food served at the school canteen was clean.

One parent told the paper that students started showing symptoms on Wednesday morning. The Nanhui Central Hospital said it has received over 10 students from the school with stomachache and vomiting complaints.

Some teachers who had lunch at the school also had similar symptoms.
