Local hospital donates surgery for teenage survivor of earthquake

A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD survivor of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake of 2008 underwent successful surgery yesterday at Shanghai Huamei Plastic Surgery Hospital.

Li Wenqian had an operation to separate her ring finger and little finger on her right hand, which had grown together after injuries she received when she was buried under debris for nearly 10 hours after the earthquake.

Li lost her left leg and some use of her right hand in the quake. She lost some 30 classmates during the earthquake.

Not beaten by the tragedy, Li worked very hard to recover and was recruited by a local leading high school. But since her family is poor, they were unable to give her surgery to separate her fingers.

Officials at the Shanghai hospital learned about her story and provided the surgery at no charge. Local charity organizations and members of the German Club Shanghai also provided donations to her.
