Elderly man gets his chance to thank 7 Samaritans

An 86-year-old man yesterday met the seven Good Samaritans who saved his life three months ago at the Xujiahui Station on Metro Line 9.

The elderly man, surnamed Huang, had tried every means to find them over the past three months by writing letters to the Metro company, publicizing search notices in newspapers and visiting the station again and again in the hope of finding them.

In the end, his efforts paid off as he got the chance to thank them personally, xinmin.cn reported.

“Without your help, I wouldn’t have been here and see all of you again,” Huang told them, all of whom are Metro staff and policemen, according to the website. “Although I may not be able to remember all your names, I would never forget your faces and what you have done for me.”

Guan Chenyi recalled that Huang came to her and asked for a cup of hot water at about 12pm on September 2.

She said Huang looked very weak and was stumbling at that time and contacted the station director on duty Qiu Linjun.

Together they put Huang on a wheelchair and took him out of the station with the help of two other colleagues in the hope that fresh air would do him good.

However, Huang’s situation only became worse as he started vomiting.

Qiu then immediately called for an ambulance and rushed him to a hospital with policemen.

None of seven had ever thought that the old man would have remembered them for such a long time.

“I want to thank them not only for saving my life, but also for letting me and my family believe there are more warm-hearted people than indifferent people in this society,” Huang said.

The Metro operator traced the seven Good Samaritans after checking the  duty sheet.

Qiu said she didn’t write Huang’s  incident into the work log since she thought it was an ordinary affair.

“I can’t remember how many people I have helped in the past 10 years working in the Metro station. This is the first time a passenger came all the way to thank me,” Qiu said.

“I felt very warm from the bottom of my heart. This is the best gift I can think of on Christmas Eve,” Qiu said.
