Cancer diagnosed in 1 in 60 city residents, and figures rising
ALMOST one in 60 Shanghai residents has been diagnosed with cancer, and numbers are rising rapidly, new figures show.
The incidence of the disease among local people with permanent residence permit was 1.79 percent in 2013, according to the Shanghai Disease Control and Prevention Center.
These figures place the city among areas with the highest rates of cancer nationwide, said officials.
On average, every day sees 150 new cancer patients, while 100 residents die from the disease.
Residents aged over 70 formed the biggest group of patients, accounting for 45 percent of those with the disease in Shanghai.
The figures found that 2 percent of females in Shanghai suffer from cancer.
The most common forms affecting them include cancer of the breast, colon, lung, stomach, thyroid, liver, pancreas, brain and central nervous system, gall bladder and ovaries.
And 1.5 percent of local men have the disease. The 10 types affecting them most are cancer of the lung, colon, stomach, liver, prostate, pancreas, oesophagus, bladder, kidney and brain and central nervous system.
All these cancers account for some 85 percent of all cases in the city.
Shanghai ranks high on China’s list of incidence of cancer and in the number of patients dying from the disease, the center reported.
While over-70s accounted for 45 percent of all cancer patients, 42 percent of cases were found in people aged between 50 and 69.
The remaining 13 percent of cases were in residents younger than 50.
The center also said smokers were tens of times more likely to develop cancer than non-smokers.
And people with liver cirrhosis or chronic gastritis are much more liable to lung or stomach cancer.
Working night shifts for a long period may trigger breast cancer among women, said officials.
