Applying for temporary residence from home

FOREIGN residents in a Jing’an District community can now apply for temporary residence certificates at the complex where they live.

Usually, foreigners, plus residents of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Chinese settled abroad, are required to go to their local police station to get the certificate.

Jing’an Zi Yuan community on Jiangning Road set up an Overseas Personnel Service Center in the lobby of its serviced apartments last week.

Foreign residents can have their passport information scanned, which is then sent directly to Jing’an Exit-Entry Administration Office.

According to the law, a registration form for temporary residence must be submitted at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this for guests.

Those who fail to register face fines of up to 2,000 yuan (US$328) and the record will affect visa extensions.

The trial in Jing’an is the city’s first service center of its kind in a residential building. Staff are provided by the property management office and have undergone training by police.

As well as dealing with applications for temporary residence, the center also provides consultation for visa processing and other public security services.

According to Jing’an District police, the service center aims to provide convenience at residential spots where many foreigners live.

It will also help them collect details on foreign residents more efficiently.

More than 70 percent of residents in Jing’an Zi Yuan are from overseas.

Police said if the experiment works well, they will add more centers to other residential buildings in Jing’an District next year, mostly in serviced apartments.

Overseas residents should go through the registration procedure again within 24 hours if they move home.
