City plans honking ban in more areas

SHANGHAI plans to expand the restriction area for honking to further ease noise pollution, authorities said in a recent forum on traffic development strategies.

Currently honking is prohibited all day within the Outer Ring Road. The policy was launched in 2007. Violators face a 100 yuan (US$16.33) fine.

Authorities also said noise detectors will be installed at major traffic junctions, elevated highways, along with roads nears railways, subway lines and airports.

The expanded area will be determined after data is gathered from the noise detectors and analyzed.

The city will also encourage the use of more noise reduction materials during road works and future construction projects.

Also on the agenda is increasing the percentage of new energy buses to 50 percent of the city’s total, according to the Shanghai Institute of Traffic Engineering. More charging stations for electric vehicles will also be built.

Meanwhile, a new bridge is planned to span Suzhou Creek, linking Changping Road in Jing’an District and Hengtong Road in Zhabei District.

There are now seven bridges along Suzhou Creek between Changshou Road and Xizang Road.
