GM food in China

• China does not plant GM staple crops for human consumption (rice, wheat, corn).
• China bans imported GM rice, wheat and corn for human consumption.
• GM papayas and cotton are grown commercially.
• GM imports in China include soybeans, corn, oilseed rape, sugar beets and cotton.
• GM safety certificates were issued in 2009 for two domestic varieties of GM rice and one of maize — they will expire next year. There is still no approval for large-scale testing, which is the last stage before commercial production is approved. The reason is public opposition.
• China is researching GM crops of many kinds, including grains.
