New flabby whalefish

AN unknown species of flabby whalefish was recently found by scientists trawling the ocean depths east of New Zealand. More than a mile down, the team's nets caught relatively few fish. But they did find several new species and some "strange-looking" ones, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

The rare flabby whalefish lack ribs and have tiny eyes. The 32cm-long specimen above was caught 2.3 kilometers down - the greatest depth ever explored by the institute.
