Telco’s carrot for 4G users in Shanghai

China Mobile plans to offer free 4G data packages and Wi-Fi time for the first batch of 4G users in Shanghai, the world’s biggest mobile carrier said yesterday.

The company will launch a “Buy one get one free” campaign which offers users free data bandwidth similar to what they get in their monthly packages that cost them between 50 yuan and 180 yuan. Users can then access 600 megabytes to 5 gigabytes worth of data.

The telco’s move was in response to complaints from analysts and industry insiders that its 4G data package was not able to meet user demand. For example, it takes only several minutes to use up a 50 yuan (US$8.1) data package.

Shanghai Mobile, which has 6,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, will offer free Wi-Fi time for users who apply for 4G services by the end of January.

The 4G technology offers users Internet speed that’s 20 to 50 times faster than current 3G platform.

China Mobile aims to sell 100 million 4G phones next year, said Chairman Xi Guohua on Wednesday.
