A man in his 60s has been taken to hospital after his car veered off Coronation Drive at Milton in Brisbane's inner west.
It crashed through roadside barriers and onto a bikeway, stopping metres from the Brisbane River.
It is believed the driver swerved at high speed down Cribb Street shortly before midday and drove through a red light before coming off the road.
The incident brought down powerlines and caused traffic lights to go out.
Sergeant Duncan Fraser from Queensland Police said the accident could have been much worse.
"Potentially it could've been devastating, we're very lucky that no other vehicles were involved, and no other pedestrians or people on their bikes were hit," he said.
"We're not too sure what the condition of the driver was prior to the accident, whether there's any sort of medical condition, but that's being looked at at the moment."
"Obviously the witnesses can't guess the speeds too well, but some of them were indicating [he was driving] around 100 kilometres per hour."
