Storm brewing as BoM staff go on strike

Sunday, 28 Aug 2016 19:31:37

Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) staff from across the country are set to begin a fortnight of industrial action following failed pay negotiations.

The action was expected to start from Monday and is in response to three years of failed negotiations by the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) on pay conditions for employees at the bureau.

As a response, employees who are members of the CPSU will not respond to media requests or update the BoM Twitter feed, with the exception of severe weather events.

CPSU deputy secretary Beth Vincent-Pietsch said internal action would also take place, such as not answering emails or telephone calls.

"This is definitely a last resort for our members," she said.

"They've had massive restructures in the bureau and so many of these staff have had to relocate, their jobs have changed, there is so much job insecurity as they move to automating the services.

"Our members just want to be able to keep what they've got in terms of paying conditions, and just have a fair pay rise put on the table and I don't that there is anyone that thinks that isn't a reasonable ask."

Earlier this year, BOM, along with other public service organisations went on strike over failed pay talks.

The Minister for Employment, Michaelia Cash, has been contacted for comment.
